Sea Scouts BSA

National Boatswain Banner- MillerIRVING, Texas- The National Sea Scout Support Committee announces the selection of Matt Miller of Katy, Texas as 2012-2013 National Sea Scout Boatswain.  His term of office is June 1, 2012 through May 31, 2013. He is a member of Ship 24, Jolly Roger of the Sam Houston Area Council, Boy Scouts of America.

Matt will represent Sea Scouts from across the United States as the youth representative on the National Sea Scout Committee. He will report to the National Commodore and the National Director of Sea Scouts. He will serve as the liaison with the Regional Boatswains’ and other youth leaders.

Matt is currently an Able Sea Scout, but is expected to qualify for his Quartermaster Award this summer. He is a member of Ship 24, and during his tenure in Sea Scouts, he has served his ship as Ship Boatswain and Ship Purser. He is a graduate of Sea Scout SEAL in 2010 at the Miami, Florida course. During the summer of 2011, he sailed on the U. S. Coast Guard Barque Eagle. Matt is also an Eagle Scout, Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow.  He has received the Hornaday Silver Award, his God and Church and God and Life religious awards, and has the Triple Crown of High Adventure Base participation by having attended all three National Boy Scouts of America High Adventure Bases.

Matt is homeschooled and will graduate this spring.  He plans on attending Lone Star College in the fall of 2012, followed by attendance at Texas A&M Galveston, the USCG Academy, or the Maine Maritime in the fall of 2013 to study for a degree in Marine Engineering.

Matt shares his reasoning for wanting to serve as the National Boatswain. He would like to further his own leadership experience while being able to give something back to the Sea Scout program. Sea Scouts has been a great program for him and it has helped him develop critical leadership skills and confidence while building his basic seamanship skills. The program has helped him to realize his interest in the maritime industry and has decided to become a marine engineer.

While serving as the National Boatswain, he plans to specifically work on ways to advertise for and recruit new Sea Scouts. He feels that membership is critical to the success of our program. He plans on taking every opportunity to spread the word about Sea Scouts. He plans on connecting to Sea Scouts through social media outlets and to gather information on what works and what does not work in their regions, councils, and ships. He plans on reaching out to all Sea Scouts to determine what they like about the program and what they want to get out of the program.

Join us in congratulating Matt Miller in his selection as the 2012-2013 National Sea Scout Boatswain!
