West-AnnouncementIRVING, TX– The National Sea Scout Support Committee announces the selection of Rachel West of Georgetown, Texas as the 2016-2017 National Sea Scout Boatswain. Her term of office is June 1, 2016 through May 31, 2017. She is a member of Ship 911, SSS Response, chartered by the San Gabriel Presbyterian Church of the Capitol Area Council, Boy Scouts of America.

Rachel will represent Sea Scouts from across the United States as the youth representative on the National Sea Scout Committee. She will report to the National Commodore and the National Director of Sea Scouts. She will serve as the liaison with the Regional Boatswains’ and other youth leaders.

Rachel has earned the Able rank in Sea Scouts, and is working on completion of the requirements for the Quartermaster Award. During her tenure in Sea Scouts, she has served her ship as Ship Boatswain and Yeoman, Council Boatswain Mate, and as the Southern Region Area 3 Vice President of Sea Scouting. She has earned her Venturing Silver, Council and Area Venturing Leadership Awards, top Sea Scout in the San Gabriel District, and was selected as a delegate to Report to the State of Texas.

She has served Scouting in many leadership positions, as well as others in the community. She has been active with Venturing, served on camp staff as Waterfront Staff, Senior Patrol Leader for the National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT), Council Venturing Officer’s Association Vice President, and youth representative for Seabadge Texas 2015.

Rachel has taken many training programs in support of her involvement in leadership. She has taken and served on staff for NYLT, Trainers’ EDGE, and NAYLE (National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience). She has further developed her skills by completing America’s Boating Course, Seamanship, Piloting, and Advanced Piloting as an Apprentice member of the United States Power Squadrons, BSA Lifeguard, Effective Quarterdeck Training, and SEAL (Sea Scout Experience for Advanced Leadership). Her passion in Scouting is with teaching and helping others.

In school, she is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Mu Alpha Theta and Orchestra. Her plans are to attend the University of Texas at Austin next year as a biology major, with a minor in business.

Rachel’s goal in serving as the National Boatswain is to make a difference. She will represent all youth in the program from around the country. Her aspirations include expanding the program by helping to guide the formation of additional ships and expanded opportunities for all Sea Scouts. She wants to be the voice of change to help youth see what they can do through the program.
