Biographical Info

Ron got involved with Scouting as a Cub Scout in 1967, and one was on the last cubs in his Pack to earn the original Lion Rank before he received his Arrow of Light. In 1969 he joined Troop 782 in Livonia, Michigan, earned his Eagle in May, 1972 (two Silver Palms) and stayed active in OA until he left for the military in 1978. As there were no Sea Scout Ships in his area, he participated in NJROTC from 1973-1976, leaving the program after serving as Cadet Divisional Commander – and the chief pilot and navigator for the YP-587 (November X-ray, November Zulu), a 75-foot retired Naval Yard Patrol Craft that was launched in 1943. He helped to transition the craft from the US Navy to the US Naval Sea Cadets, and piloted & navigated the craft in October gales on the Great Lakes from Detroit to Muskegon.

Ron started serving as an adult volunteer in 1976 – and has served in one capacity or another ever since. He has been a Commissioner (Unit, Roundtable, Assistant District, District, Assistant Council, Assistant Area, Assistant Regional Commissioner), as well as serving as a Cub Master, Scoutmaster, Explorer Assistant Advisor, Venturing Advisor, Sea Scout Committee Chair, Chartered Organization Representative (or Scouting Coordinator), serving numerous District, Council, Area, and National positions and committees, and staffing at two National Jamborees. He has attended & staffed Woodbadge, and Powder Horn. In 2007 he helped to found Ship 24 in the Tuscarora District of the Central Florida Council and served as its Committee Chair until he returned to Michigan in 2012. He attended Seabadge in the Southern Region at SR-33 in 2008. And has since served on staff as 1st Mate for SB-22-MI-2015. He also helped found a Venturing Crew in 2006 for which he received the WD Boyce Award and the Council-level Venturing Leadership Award. Previously, Ron served as the Vice Commodore for the Southern Shores Field Service Council in Michigan.

Ron has been honored by being presented the Silver Antelope, Silver Beaver, District Award of Merit, the Scouter’s Key four-times (Commissioner, Scoutmaster, Cubmaster, Venturing Advisor) and the Scouters’ Training Award for every program he has participated in. He holds a Doctorate of Commissioner Science, and the Distinguished Commissioner Service Award, and numerous other training awards. A member of the US Power Squadron, he was originally a member of the “Internet Squadron” and he is now a member of the Dearborn Sail and Power Squadron, and has completed his Seamanship & Piloting training. He also completed the US Coast Guard Auxiliary About Boating Safely course.

When not being a professional Scouting Volunteer, Ron works at the University of Michigan Health System as a Senior Project Manager in their IT organization. He is a certified project manager, Six Sigma Black Belt, and experienced in numerous IT processes including ITIL, CMM, and CMMI. He is married and has two adult children, both of whom have participated in Scouting or Venturing. Ron is a proud veteran, having served in the US Army, and is a Life Member of the VFW and American Legion, where he serves on his Department’s Scouting Committee.

Currently, Ron is the Central Region’s Vice Commodore – Technology & Communications, and a member of the Central Region Sea Scout Service Committee. He also serves as the Region’s “Data Dog” and helps the Area Commodores better understand the membership and health of the Ships in their Areas.
