Tom RossVice Commodore of Program Central Region
Tom started in scouting in 1968, he earned his Eagle Scout award in 1971, and received an additional three palms, finishing with 36 merit badges and a silver palm. He remained active in scouting until he left for College. Tom started working back in Scouting as an Adult Volunteer in 2003. He has served as an Assistant Scoutmaster, Scoutmaster, Unit Commissioner (10 years), Chartered Organization Representative, and has held numerous District and Council volunteer positions, helping with his Council’s University of Scouting, and College of Commissioner Science. He received his Doctorate of Commissioner Science in 2009. He attended Woodbadge in 2005, and was beaded in 2006.
Tom helped start a Venturing Crew, and received the WD Boyce Award for his efforts. He has also received the Silver Beaver, District Award of Merit, Distinguished Commissioner Service Award, and his Scouters’ Training Award for Boy Scouting and Sea Scouting, and his Scouters’ Key for service on his District Committee. He is also a recipient of the Cub Scouter Award. In 2011 he was honored by being presented the Faithful Servant Award, the adult religious award from the Churches of Christ. An avid hiker, Tom has received 33 hiking awards, and has served as staff for two National Jamborees. He has served on staff, or been course director for Powder Horn, Kodiak, and Kodiak X training for the Venturing program.
Tom has been part of the Committee for Ship 468 since it was founded in 2006. He attended Seabadge CR-V, and served on staff for Seabadge courses CR-VI, VII, VIII, and IX, culminating by being selected as Course Director for CR-X. Tom also served on the “senior” staff for SB-22-MI-2015 this last fall. He served as Area 4 Commodore from 2007-2013, joined the Central Region Sea Scout Service Committee in 2008, and has served as the Central Region Vice Commodore for Program since 2014.
When not participating in his favorite avocation, Tom has worked for the last 12 years in the receiving department for Kohl’s department stores. He is married to his lovely wife Lori. Tom and Lori have shown great servant-leadership by being a host family for 10 students from other countries.
