Sea Scouts – Scouting America

These updates to the advancement requirements were approved on 7 May. The effective date for these changes is 7/1/2026. The expiration date for previous version is 6/30/2026. Users can use new version when it hits production.

A quick summary of the changes:

  • Lifeguard certification has been removed as a Quartermaster advancement requirement. It has been moved to become a Level 3 elective.
  • NauticEd has been added to electives. There is a Level 1, Level 2, and a Level 3.
  • Ordinary can now only complete Level 1 electives, Able can only complete Level 2 electives, and Quartermaster can only complete Level 3 electives.

Advancement Details by Rank

Ordinary

  • Next text for 17: “Complete three Level One electives.”

Able

  • New text for 15: “Complete four Level Two electives.”

Quartermaster

  • Delete 4: “Swimming.”
  • New text for 12: “Complete four Level Three electives.”

Electives

  • Added as a new elective category: NauticEd
    • Level 1: Record your time on the water using NauticEd’s online Logbook.
    • Level 2: Successfully complete NauticEd’s Navigation Rules for Sailboats or NauticEd’s Navigation Rules for Powerboats Course.
    • Level 3: Successfully complete a NauticEd advanced course.
  • Added as a Level 3 elective under Specialty Proficiency: Complete the requirements for lifeguard through the Scouts BSA, the American Red Cross, or other approved organization’s lifeguard course.
