Dawn Riley, was a Sea Scout in Sea Explorer Ship 147 of North Star Sail Club in Harrison Charter Township, MI during the 1980’s. She would eventually use the skills she learned in Sea Scouts during the sailed in the 33,000 nautical mile Whitbread Round the World Race with an all-female crew. Their journey is being shared through a new documentary, Maiden.

Riley later became the first woman ever to manage an America’s Cup team. She went on to serve as president of the Women’s Sports Foundation and was on the board of the U.S. Sailing Association. Today, she’s executive director of the Oakcliff Sailing Center in Oyster Bay, NY, a training center that has prepared teams for the Olympics, America’s Cup and other sailing competitions.
